Every aspect of my life until now has shaped me into the person I am and will contribute to the heritage I will one day leave behind.

I am proudly South African. The green and gold run deep in my blood. I love the humor, fire, and passion that courses through our veins. I love the way we can make fun of ourselves and the way we make light of situations that keep us in the dark, especially when we suffer without electricity. Today, the entire country is in mourning. Our beloved Bokke lost the game to the Irish hounds last night.

Before the game, it was all happiness. Braai fires were lit, and the neighborhood was buzzing with voices and music. Everywhere you went, people wore their green and gold jerseys. The usual long queues at the supermarket tills became meeting points for strangers to exchange pleasantries, as everyone was united in their excitement.

I went to Woolworths to pay my dues to the mighty braai gods and wanted to buy a little piece of steak for Christopher. The braai section looked like it had been violated. Nothing in sight, just a few tjoppies left to their own devices. A family of five congregated in front of the fridges and the youngest threw his hands in the air and said: “Wat gaan ons NOU braai, Pa?”! I later saw them at SPAR, in the meat section again. This time we all left victorious.

We face a lot of problems as a nation. In a way, it has taught us to be resilient, think out of the box (not only ‘boere’ making a plan anymore), roll with the punches, but most of all, it has ignited a small flame of pride that is steadily becoming a roaring fire. We fall down, but we stand up, dusting our knees, and then we are ready for the next round. Just like the rugby. Our boys took their loss on the chin and admitted their mistakes. The memes on social media have brought much-needed humour to the situation, and as always, we are optimistic about the next game. We are sulking but not for long. No doubt our enthusiasm will be at an all-time high next weekend, the green and gold jerseys will be back on, and the ‘braai’ fires lit. That’s how we roll.

Heritage Day is also a very special day for our family as we celebrate the birthday of our eldest, Briony. While we, as a family, are literally strewn across the earth, we are Proudly South African to our core. In celebration of her birthday, we had a slice of homemade milktart and a koeksister each. Dad and I had to go lie down after that as we had heart palpitations. It’s OK, we are taking our training for the December family reunion very seriously; just hope Briony, Keagen & Hannah won’t let the family name down. I am so sick of trying to cook for two and failing miserably, so we are on our A Game at the moment. Shape up, children.

Heritage is not just where you come from; it is also what you leave behind one day. Our kids are the greatest gift we have to offer. They have become better people than we are. They inspire us daily and make these two old hearts soar. It doesn’t matter where they live; they will always be “Made in South Africa”.

Here is to celebrating Heritage Day.
