Our family motto is: “The holiday starts as soon as we leave the gate and ends when we arrive back at said gate.” So be it with Christmas 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our family holiday at home started when we left the gate to collect Briony on the 9 December and ended when we arrived back at the gate after taking them back to the airport on the 29 December. On our first night together were all united as a family, sitting around the dining room table, trading stories and eating Mom’s breyani. That feeling of having all of us together was without doubt my most precious Christmas gift.\u2002Despite jet lag and being over excited we stayed up late laughing and catching up on each others lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It didn't take Fuzzy long to realize his compatriot, human cushion, and best buddy had arrived back for his comfort only. Between Hannah and Keagen, they took turns holding him in their arms at the table at every meal. The usually bolshy little shit lay in Keagen's arms with his legs in the air, and his eyes closed when he wasn't lying in Hannah's arms.<\/code> He made himself at home being passed from Hannah to Keagen and enjoyed every second thereof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That was the first night we went to sleep with a full house, all kids accounted for, wearing our Christmas PJs that mom insisted were part of the festive experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our first breakfast together set the tone for all the breakfasts thereafter.\u2002Loud, happy and in Wilde style. I willed myself into enjoying the moment and not waste any time thinking about the dreaded day they were going to leave.\u2002Throughout the kids holiday the kids came and went as they pleased.\u2002Keagen & Hannah went off to Mooiriver for 2 nights to go see their school friends and Briony kept me company.\u2002The house was a hub of activity as we prepared for Christmas Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then Mom saw the ad for the Christmas lights display at a casino on the East Rand and within minutes, the tickets were purchased for a night of festive delight. We all piled into the Goanywherevehicle and drove to the venue, meeting Dad there. Unfortunately, expectation did not meet reality. The designated area had been transformed into the “Christmas delight” was set in a parking lot and hundreds of people had the same thought as I did. The weather didn’t play ball either as it was a record-breaking heatwave that accompanied us through the enclosed area, which had very little ventilation. We stood shoulder to shoulder with a crowd that sweated and swarmed their way through the small tunnels, gathering in front of the few air-cons and fans that were allocated few and far between. People giggled and made friends while they found refuge in the cool air that disappeared as soon as it arrived. It was torturous yet delightful as the Christmas spirit was evident and the excitement from the children spilled over onto the adults. That’s why I love Christmas. It’s like the whole planet takes a break from being nasty… We survived the ordeal but let’s just put a ‘to not be repeated’ sticker on that evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Back home, Hannah’s Dad, Al, and Laurel, were joining us for Christmas, which meant the cottage had to be spick & span. I didn’t need to go to the gym as I was doing 10,000 steps and more a day. I had a picture in my head of how I wanted the festivities to be, and nothing was going to stand in my way. It’s amazing how things sometimes just fall into place, and for once, my picture became a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had to remind myself of the resolution that I had made prior to the kids arrival. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes I think back on my life and I wonder what I would change if I could go back. In reality I would not change much bar one thing. I would allow myself to enjoy the special moments just a little more, be in the moment paying more attention. The special days that were always spent rushing around, driving myself crazy with things that had to be done in order to achieve the best possible outcome has robbed me of those moments. That I would change and with this in mind I kept reminding myself to pay more attention to the moments, the glimmers that could slip by unnoticed so quickly.<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Every night I went to bed knowing we were all under one roof… that was enough Christmas present for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the days leading up to Christmas Day I was rushing around trying to buy the final touches and gifts. The days were unbearably hot, the shops crowded, and everybody was rushing around to finish their shopping. I drove to the local shopping center with the intention to quickly pop in, do my shopping, and leave. It seemed that everybody else had the same idea and the parking lot was full. I had to park in an area that was quite far from the shops, and as I hopped out of the car, I noticed that the vehicle parked next to me had all four windows cranked open a little at the top. My 'moer' meter went from zero to a thousand in one second as I immediately knew there was a dog in the car. People in the Vaal are known for shopping while their dogs are left in the car, slowly baking away.<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n
I circled the little green VW while saying really ugly things under my breath. To my dismay, I saw the little black dog lying in the space between the front and back seat. It didn't even move as I called out. <\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"The dog is dead\" is the only thought that crossed my mind. I must have been quite a sight standing by the back window of the car, frantically trying to get a response from a non-responsive animal. Within seconds, I had a very concerned car guard by my side.<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n
“What seems to be the problem, ma’am?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“There is a dog locked in this car. How long has it been parked here? Do you know that it is illegal for people to leave animals and children in an unattended car? I think the dog is dead!” <\/p>\n\n\n\n
My shrill voice was accompanied by my furious foot stamping routine, which emphasized each word that I said. (Signature Yvette move when I am cross.)<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n
The guard now looked at me with a perplexed look on his face.” There is no dog in this car,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Yes there IS!” I replied.\u2002”Look” and I pointed towards the poor little dog lying comatose on the floor of the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The guy peered through the window and then looked back at me ” That’s not a dog, that is a wig.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
” Fuck”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I got back in my car and parked on the other side of the shopping centre determined to mind my own business. In my rear view mirror, I could see the face of the bemused guard watching my hasty retreat. I think I should think about minding my own business a little more in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Christmas Eve, we all sat outside by the pool trading stories of all Eves gone by. As per tradition, the kids were allowed to open one (which quickly became two) gifts. It would have been the whole lot if it were up to me, but luckily there were adults in the group that knew when to apply the brakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Christmas morning, Dad made coffee, and we all gathered around the tree. The exchange of gifts took a long time as there was a lot of squealing and jolliness in the air. The gift exchange was enjoyed by the entire family, the dogs watched on in great amusement as the humans shrieked while unwrapping the spoils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I know that spending these moments with the family are precious ones. No Christmas will ever be the same but family traditions will live on long after we have left.\u2002The kids will have their children and they will celebrate Christmas in their own way but hopefully with a little bit of our traditions edged in there, somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next few days flew by. We went to movies, ate too much, laughed a lot, and all too soon the time came to make the dreaded trip to the airport. Whether it was by fluke or not, the kids had booked their departure dates on the same day. OR Tambo was a messy place on the 29th of December, that’s all I have to say about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The arrivals lounge at the airport has a distinct happy flavor and the departure area is synonymous with sadness. I watched the people as they said goodbye to family and friends. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. I soon cried for people I didn’t know and then some more for myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
C’est la Vie.\u2002We live for those arrival moments, already planning Christmas 2024.\u2002We have to look forward, not look back except when we relive the moments that take our breath away.Every goodbye makes way for a new hello to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
